While traveling through Alabama, we stopped in at the Army Corp of Engineers’ Gunter Hill Campground. This older campground is a coin toss when it comes to accessibility. Gunter Hill has two distinct camping loops: Antiock and Catoma. The newer one, Catoma, has smooth roads, level pads, and lots of pull-through spaces. The older loop, Antiock, (where we stayed) has twisty, curvy, bumpy roads with thick mud along the edges. All the sites are back in too; pull thoroughts were only available in Catoma. Of course, we didn’t know any of this when we checked in.

Pro Tip, Book ahead at Gunter Hill Campground

Speaking of checking in. As we were planning our route, we noticed this campground had a lot of openings. We didn’t bother pre-registering and just drove up! This was apparently the wrong decision. The person manning the registration desk acted extremely put out and put upon registering us. Being a government-managed campground, it all ran through the web page, there was no easy drop-in mode on the computer. While it was inconvenient for all involved, the employee didn’t have to make us feel like we did something wrong.

As for amenities, the campground had free hot showers and a nice playground for the kids. If we were in a mind to fish we could have on the river just outside our spot. It looked like there was at one point a laundromat on site, but it was locked up and through the window, I could only make out 2 low-capacity dryers. Catoma may have been better.

While being among trees was nice, I can’t recommend this campground to any large rigs, as getting the bus in and out was stress-filled and perilous.
