This was the second private campground we stayed at on our trip back to the West Coast. However, it wasn’t planned. After staying for a few nights with a few Boondockers Welcome hosts across North Carolina, we were looking forward to another one when trouble happened.

As we mentioned once before in things don’t go smooth, driving a bus isn’t as easy as driving a compact car. Except this time, instead of getting the bus stuck in a ditch, we got the bus stuck on a hill! Well, not exactly. While Mom sums it up nicely at the end of the above-linked article, I’ll restate it here. Our tow hitch for the toad sits very low. So low that the sharp angle change caused it to dig into the pavement. This caused a flex of the internal components and caused the engine to stall.

Once we got a tow off the hill, the bus started without a problem. We elected not to visit this Boondockers Welcome host.

Change of plans: Riverbreeze Campground

Collecting our breath, we chose to book a few nights at River Breeze Campground.

River Breeze Campground is pretty typical for RV campgrounds. Ample space to turn big rigs, hot showers in a communal bathhouse, and free “WiFi” on paper. One thing we weren’t expecting was a scenic walking trail along the Catawba River. This trail had many little access paths and private beaches. While Mom and I were collecting our nerves and recovering from getting “stuck” again, the kids spent all day down by the river watching nature and having a blast.

While the place markets itself as a resort, it’s just a nice parking lot. Maybe in the main season, it hosts events like Camp Cardinal, but while we were there, it was just a quiet place to relax and calm down. If you’re in the area and need a spot to just be for a bit, River Breeze Campground may fit the bill for you.
