While exploring Capitol Reef National Park, we struggled a bit to find a good spot to Boondock. We actually spent time at two different spots. The first spot, just off of South Northam Road, was just outside the park but had no cell service. Since we didn’t have a satellite dish for our internet, we needed to find a different location. Luckily, Gun Range Road fit the bill perfectly.

Secluded But Accessible
One of the best features of Gun Range Road is its seclusion. The spot we chose was about a mile off the highway and the only traffic on the road was a dump truck and a few fellow campers. Additionally, the spot we chose was a nearly-level spur of sandstone that was perfectly sized for our rig! It was like having our own secret driveway.
The views of the desert were amazing, but also parching! We visited at the beginning of June and we were feeling it! The temperatures during the day were over 100, and it didn’t start to cool off until after the sun went down, leaving us at a loss. We didn’t have a generator yet, so we were reliant on the sun for all our power. We ended up cutting our stay short, skipping the other two National Parks in the Big 5, and running off to Colorado for the summer.
Amenities Near Gun Range Road
Just as its location suggests, there isn’t much around the area. The nearest town, Hanksville, doesn’t have much. There is a small grocery store that doesn’t have much and is quite expensive. We found a nearby Sinclair that offered water, but the nearest dump station was in the Fruita Campground. We actually dumped and filled our water at Fruita on the way in. On the way out, we dumped at a Maverik in Green River, Utah, on our way to the mountains.

We are super close to each other if your posting in real time 🙂
I am between Zion and Bryce, heading towards Grand Staircase Escalante and Capital Reef this weekend! Hanksville after!
Safe travels!
I’m sorry, we’re no where nere there. All posts on locations are delayed from several months to a year for our safty. Do enjoy your trip to Bryce Canyon!
