Not every boondocking spot is amazing. But none of them, to date, has been horrible. The BLM land off of Arizona 337 south of Holbrook sits happily in the middle, maybe biased toward the latter. While most, if not all, BLM land is “mixed use,” this area is more so than others.

The area is a sprawling scrubland that’s heavily used by local ranchers for cattle range. When we were there, there was a particularly bad wind event, and we weren’t very interested in scouting around much. We parked just off of Porter Canyon Road next to an artificial pond used to water the same cattle. This was not ideal, but fairly level, and OK for the time we were there, as it was just a stop for exploring the area.

Things to do Around Holbrook, Arizona

One of the chief reasons we stayed here was that it gave us access to Petrified Forest National Park. However, Holbrook isn’t without its merits. The city is large enough to host a few grocery stores and laundromats to help support your needs. As for water and dump stations, there is a Maverik station just to the north of I-40 that has a free dump station and potable water. We’ve quickly come to love Maverik stations when we can find them.

While it’s not glamorous, it’s also not very popular. So the BLM land south of Holbrook might be just what you need on your cross-country adventure.
