Skull Creek Campground was one of those rare treats: a free 14-day BLM campground with facilities! The campground is pretty easy to get to, but taller rigs should be careful, as both entrance roads have low branches overhanging the road. Our bus, at just under 12’ tall, barely passed under the branches.

I don’t mean to oversell it. By facilities, all I mean is a vault toilet and trash cans. The trash cans are probably the best part. Finding ethical and inexpensive ways to handle the trash is a constant challenge. Between what we generate in daily life and through cleaning up the areas where we stay, it adds up. Otherwise, the area has several spacious and marked camping spots, each with a fire ring and metal picnic table.
When we arrived at Skull Creek Campground, there was only one other camper, and we found a spot on the other side of the grounds from them. However, during our stay, the population surged and shrank through the weekends. There were some pretty loud groups that liked to party, as well as families and groups ranging from couples to multi-family outings. There was also evidence of ATV trails, and lots of signs that implied the campground was a popular base camp for hunting. With that in mind, if you do plan to stay here, maybe aim for spring and arrive in the middle of the week.
Amenities Around Skull Creek Campground
Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), this campground is pretty far off the beaten path. While the nearest grocery store is about 30 minutes away, the nearest decent groceries are easily an hour north or south along the 1-5 corridor. The same can be said for other RV needs, like laundry, parts, or other services. This makes Skull Creek a good rest stop and escape, but not well-suited for a stock-up or repair site.
