Living on the road is a study in minimalism. As we covered in preparing your rig for boondocking, weight is the enemy, and storage is at a premium. Because of this, we’ve really gotten away from “stuff” as gifts for birthdays and instead, we’ve gone almost exclusively to experiences. We’ve chronicled a couple of these, from a pirate cruise to a horseback ride, and today is no exception.

When we were with Fulltime Families at Balloon Fiesta, we experienced a family entertainment center called “Main Event,” which turns out to be a bit of a chain. The Boy, having loved the experience in Albuquerque, wanted to go again. Lucky for us, we found a location near our favorite boondocking spot outside of Phoenix, AZ.

What to Expect at Main Event

Main Event is a hub of all sorts of activities under one roof, including but not limited to

  • Bowling
  • Video arcade
  • Ropes course
  • Pool hall
  • Dining
  • Laser tag

Main Event is free to get into, but all the activities cost a fee. There are several different packages to choose from, so it’s very affordable for a family night out from time to time. There’s even a bar, so the 21+ “kids” in your party can have some fun (though we had plenty of fun without alcohol!).

While Main Event has food, it’s not their main offering, so the quality is only so-so. Luckily, the location we visited was in a strip mall and had many other eateries within walking distance.

Perry’s Pizzeria and Brew House

We’re always looking for a good pizza place, so we decided to try out Perry’s Pizzeria and Brew House, and we were NOT disappointed. The serving staff were on point, quick, and super friendly. It was clear they loved working there and the products.

We ordered the Bavarian pretzel as an appetizer, and it came with an indescribably delicious house-made beer cheese dipping sauce!

Not sure what else to order, we got their signature Five Boroughs; basically a supreme. This pizza was huge and comfortably fed the four of us. It was also enhanced by the beer cheese!

Since we were there for the boy’s birthday, they gave us a complimentary order of birthday bites! They are deep-fried miniature “elephant ears” with a dusting of sugar and sprinkles, with a set of 3 different dipping sauces.

Suffice to say, The Boy had an amazing birthday, and we got a new favorite pizza place to visit!
