While we were in South Texas we got to celebrate The Boy’s Birthday!

While driving to Resaca De La Palma State Park we saw a few billboards advertising pirate cruises. Knowing that The Boy has been pirate-obsessed since he was 3 or 4, we knew that this would be the perfect birthday present!
The first thing we did was book online with Black Dragon Pirate Cruises, based out of Port Isabel, Texas. The booking went smoothly and looked like we were going to have a great adventure on his birthday. That was until the company that runs the cruise called us a couple of days later to let us know the boat wouldn’t be available during that time as it would be down for maintenance. Crestfallen, we then booked a new cruise, again on his birthday, but with the Red Dragon Pirate Cruises, based out of Port Aransas, Texas. This was a 3-hour drive away from Brownsville, so we made sure to be up early and were excited for our Pirate Adventure! While driving to the ship we got a few calls from unknown numbers, but didn’t pick up because we were driving…
When we got there, the parking lot was surprisingly spacious and we found out why when we went to check in. The boat had broken down the night before, and while they had high hopes that the part needed would have been delivered that morning, it hadn’t shown up so they had to cancel the show. That was the reason for the phone calls.
Making Lemonade
Since we were already 3 hours from home we decided to see what we could do in Port Aransas. Luckily, we found a pretty great park in The Roberts Point Park.

The park had a huge play structure and several spinning toys that both the kids and us parents had fun with!

After playing for a while, we decided to get some chow. One thing that we’ve not had as much as we used to now that we are on the road is pizza. We used to do “Pizza and Star Trek” every Friday, baking either homemade pizzas or more often Totinos’ $1 specials. Once we tried that on the bus, and our tiny oven took forever to make the pizzas. We could only make one at a time, versus the 4 we used to be able to churn out. Long story short, we found Port A Pizzaria right there in town. It was a low-cost All You Can Eat Pizza Buffet! Not only that but if you wanted a particular pizza that you didn’t see out, all you had to do was ask and they’d make one. Suffice it to say, we took this Lemon of a day and made lemonade!

Finishing the Quest
We did end up booking again with the Black Dragon later that month and The boy had an AMAZING time.

Not only did the boy get his Pirate adventure, which was a blast for the whole family but it also opened up an interesting door for our family that you’ll have to stay tuned to read about!
