While roving up the 101 in the spring of 2025, we found a dearth of public land. As such, we spent more than a couple of nights in casino parking lots and a few brief stays in RV parks. Cher’ere Campground in Klamath, California, was probably our favorite park to date.

What to Expect at Cher’ere Campground

Cher’ere Campground is a campground in flux. While it’s clearly been in the area a long time, it’s showing signs of being under new management that’s trying to economically increase what the campground has to offer.

The park, as of our visit, was affordable and very quiet. In addition to that peace, the RV slips were huge! They are a breeze to get in and out of, and the only obstacle to contend with was the nearly knee-high grass in places. In addition to the RV slips, the park has several tent-only lots that are very roomy but lack any screening shrubbery.

Gravel access road to the river and a rudimentary boat launch.

Other than the roomy sites, the campground has a small bathhouse. At least on the men’s side, there was only a single shower stall and two toilet stalls. The shower water was hot and didn’t require coins, which is always a plus. In addition to the bathhouse, the owners also added a trailer with several restrooms and a 4-machine coin-op laundromat. The laundromat was super convenient, if a bit pricy. The machines were not the large units one would find in a regular laundromat, but small “over-under” machines that would be at home in an apartment closet.

Our very spacious camping spot

Cher’ere Campground also had horseshoe pits, corn hole boards, and volleyball nets. All the necessary equipment was just left out and available, though the fields, like everything else, were overgrown with tall grass. (Mom here, in defense of the tall grass: It was early in the season and still wet. We know as well as anyone how difficult it is to mow wet grass.)

When we pulled in, there were signs about checking in with the camp host; however, there was no camp host. When we were pulling out, we were informed by management, who had come in to try and tackle the tall grass, that their camp host had left them high and dry a couple of weeks ago. Despite the lack of an on-site host, the facilities were in good repair.

What To Do Around Cher’ere Campground

This great park is not only peaceful, but it is also convenient to Redwood National Park. Crescent City is just north of the campground, offering a variety of grocery stores, as well as full-sized laundry facilities.

Regardless of whether you’re just passing through or looking for a cozy spot to vacation, Cher’ere Campground is definitely a location you want to keep on your radar.
