Our first stop while fleeing the summer heat in Utah, Deep Creek Campground struck us as a great retreat for a few days. While the location was beautiful, it did have some notable drawbacks.
Deep Creek Campground is a little different from most other BLM camping experiences we’ve had. Deep Creek wasn’t a true dispersed camping experience. It’s a collection of 5 first come first served spots just off of Coffee Pot Road. Of the spots, only two are “Big Rig” friendly; the rest are perfect for car-camping families.

The other drawback of Deep Creek Campground is there is absolutely no cell phone signal. Even satellite internet would be difficult in the heavily treed and deep mountain canyon. That said, we only stayed a couple of nights to recover from the long drive up to 10,000 feet and moved on to a better location.
Dad scouted on foot up the mountain and found a few spots off of Coffee Pot road past the “official” spots. The spots were unmarked, well-used, and had some cell signal. Getting to them would be rough in a big rig. The turns are tight and there is absolutely nowhere to turn around if you do go up there. If you want to check them out, it would be best to park your rig at the pit toilets and scout on foot or in a toad.
Amenities Near Deep Creek BLM Campground
Being so far off the beaten path, there were surprisingly good groceries nearby in the town of Eagle, Colorado. We weren’t in town long enough to do a laundry run so can’t vouch for those services. As for RV services nearby, we stopped in a Flying J near Grand Junction to fill our water tanks, seeing it as the only definite option that could accommodate our rig close to the spot.
