While “rely” is too strong a word, we’ve come to appreciate casinos as acceptable “spots between spots.” They are almost always free, spacious, and happy to host weary travelers. Garcia River Casino in Point Arena, California, is the exception.

What to Expect at Garcia River Casino

The casino itself is sparse; mostly a large card room with some video slot machines. Google mostly marks it for its restaurant, which is telling. When I entered to check in, I was informed that we needed to pay $15 a night. While not expensive, it’s a lot for a parking lot in the middle of nowhere. Additionally, they only allow one-night stays, though the security individual I checked in with didn’t mention this, and we were allowed to stay one more night, for another $15.

The casino is only semi-convenient to several beach access locations along the 101. This is where we spent most of our time. The area is also a bit of a services desert, with no large grocery stores, and the only laundromat was about 40 minutes south. It even advertised itself as the only laundromat in the area.

If you’re passing through and need to rest on a budget, Garcia River Casino will work. However, if you want to stay in the area longer, this is a definite pass.

Mom here: You used to be able to spend the night at dozens of pull-outs along the 101. Unfortunately, that’s not the case anymore. It’s likely due to abuse and garbage. Just another reminder for all of us to take care of the spaces we do have.
