A rare sunny moment we experienced at Lake Quitman West Dam Dispersed Camping Area

Our first stop in Texas on our run south from The Sugar Beet Harvest. Lake Quitman West Dispersed Camping was a great place to cool our heels for a bit and recover from a simply horrible cold that was going around the bus.

Located 20 minutes or so outside of the town of Lake Quitman, it’s a little off the beaten path, but not so much as to be inaccessible. The place was fairly easy to navigate with our huge school bus up top. However, down by the lake, the road is much more dodgy, though there are a few fire rings down there. We pulled right off the road in the middle of a field. We would have had great sun for our solar system if it didn’t rain nearly the whole stay. Actually, this stop finally got me to figure out how to get our alternator charger set up as we were using more energy than our panels were able to bring in.

Overall, it’s a great place to stay for a few days. If the weather had been better, and the kids healthier, we probably would have enjoyed a little swimming on the lake or a little light rafting.
