While we were visiting Washington, DC, we wanted a place that was a little closer than Camp Cardinal. Lucky for us, we were able to get a spot at the Pohick Bay Regional Campground, in Lorton, Virginia!
Unfortunately, we were so busy exploring Washington, DC while we stayed here, that we didn’t spend much time here. We can say that the campground is clean, well-maintained, and very busy on the weekends. One night, they had a movie night where the staff set up a little outdoor movie theater and served popcorn. This was one night that we were very happy that we got the kids syncUP watches! After the movie, The Girl got a little turned around and was able to call us. The park isn’t particularly large and we were able to catch up with her and calm her down.
The park is adjacent to a water park, “The Pirate Cove,” however we didn’t use it as we were gone all day most of the days we were there, it cost extra, and we had access to the water park at Camp Cardinal.
The campground also had a few walking trails that The Dog enjoyed when we returned from our trips to DC.
Our site had water and electric hookups. Some sites had full hookups, and some just had electricity. We had difficulty leveling our rig on our site, but there were flatter sites.
One Drawback at Pohick Bay
One thing we found very disappointing was that their ADA bathroom was always locked. The Boy had injured his knee about a week before our trip, so was either on crutches or a wheelchair during this trip. He found showering in a regular shower stall very difficult. One thing is for sure; our experience with The Boy made us much more aware of the difficulties experienced by those with disabilities!
Overall, we were very impressed. One day we hope to come back to Pohick Bay. Possibly as workampers, and again use it as a launch pad for a more leisurely exploration of our nation’s capital.
