So far on our travels, there haven’t been many places where we had a need or opportunity to go back to. Standard Wash, specifically the Sandpit, is one such location. Just outside of Lake Havasu City, and right off of the highway, this large, relatively flat area is the perfect location to stay while touring this popular city in the middle of the desert.

Getting to the Sandpit is a little tricky, and not clearly signed. Get off the highway at the gravel quarry and take an immediate right onto a dirt road that fronts the highway. After a bit, it opens up into a large area open for camping up to 14 days.

Being so close to the city, Standard Wash is the perfect place to set up if you’re attending any events at the Sara Rodeo ground. This was actually the main reason for both of our visits. The first time was when we were going to attend Xscapers Bash and wanted a short drive into the event. The second was to attend the Lake Havasu City Renaissance Festival, also at the rodeo grounds. In addition to the rodeo grounds, Lake Havasu City is also home to the London Bridge. The London Bridge is an actual bridge, transported stone by stone, and rebuilt in the city as a way to attract tourists.

Amenities In and Around Standard Wash

Standard Wash has no amenities. It is a large space with a gravel surface. Popular with OHV enthusiasts, it gets crowded and noisy. However, if you’re set up for boondocking, the price can’t be beat.

Lake Havasu City, being a larger city, has several grocers, including a Walmart. It also plays host to many RV, Boat, and ATV dealers. This makes getting parts for any needed repairs a lot easier. The town has at least three laundromats, though they vary greatly in price. The least expensive one we found is attached to the country store; it is “Deli Laundromat” on Google Maps.

As for water and dump stations, for a small fee, one can dump and refill their rigs at the nearby Lake Havasu State Park.

Whether you are there for the lake, the shows, or just passing through, Standard Wash BLM camping will give you the perfect spot to rest between trips to the city.
